Khloé Kardashian is sharing why she took on the responsibility of caring for Amari Thompson — the 18-year-old brother of her ex, NBA player Tristan Thompson.
Speaking on the July 30 episode of her podcast Khloé in Wonder Land, the 41-year-old Kardashians star addressed her ongoing role as Amari’s primary caretaker, a role she assumed after the sudden death of Tristan’s mother, Andrea Thompson, in January 2023.

“For those who don’t know, Tristan has a younger brother who is severely disabled,” Khloé explained. “Amari has LGS (Lennox-Gastaut syndrome), a rare form of epilepsy. He can’t walk or speak, and he never has.”
Andrea had been Amari’s sole caretaker in Canada. After her passing, Khloé said, “We — me, Tristan, and my whole family — brought Amari with us back to the States.”
Khloé revealed that Tristan’s demanding NBA travel schedule makes it impossible for him to be Amari’s full-time caregiver. “He’s in a different state every few days, and that kind of constant flying isn’t safe for Amari, who has multiple seizures every day,” she said.
“So Amari stays in L.A. with me,” she continued. “I’ve chosen to be there for him, to care for him — because it’s what’s best for him.”

Khloé emphasized how much joy Amari brings to her household, which includes her and Tristan’s two children, True and Tatum. “I love having Amari be part of our family,” she said. “He lights up when he’s around the kids. He can’t talk, but if you know him, you know he communicates in his own way — and his eyes just sparkle.”
She also gave a heartfelt shout-out to the two professional caregivers who help her support Amari’s medical needs. “We just want to give him the most beautiful life we can,” she said. “He deserves that.”
Despite no longer being romantically involved with Tristan, Khloé says her bond with Amari — and his late mother — remains strong. “People ask me why I help with Amari if Tristan and I aren’t together,” she said. “But when I met Tristan almost a decade ago, his mom and I became incredibly close. I helped her with Amari’s medical needs, appointments, finding doctors — everything.”

Khloé added, “Andrea meant so much to me, and her passing doesn’t change my commitment to her or to Amari. Whether I’m with Tristan or not, Amari deserves my love and care.”
After Andrea’s passing, Tristan filed to become Amari’s legal guardian. The family has since celebrated milestones together, including Amari’s 18th birthday last April, which was featured on The Kardashians.
In the episode, Khloé said, “Amari has never and will never be a burden. He’s one of the most special souls I’ve ever met.”
Khloé continues to support Amari’s passions, recently cheering him on at a dance recital and sharing a backstage selfie with him and her mother, Kris Jenner. She captioned the photo: “I love you so much, mommy. Thank you for always supporting ALL of us.”
