A woman is convinced her mother-in-law is exaggerating — or even faking — her dizzy spells to get more attention from her son.
In a post shared to Reddit, the woman explained that she and her husband hadn’t seen his mother in a while. During a recent visit, however, she noticed what she believed was a staged case of vertigo.
“I have never experienced vertigo… so anyone who has… please enlighten me if I am downplaying it and it really is serious,” she wrote.

Things came to a head when the couple was preparing for a weekend away. Just before they left, her husband got a message saying his mother had been “rushed to the hospital the AFTERNOON before with a mild case of vertigo.”
The woman pointed out that it was odd her husband was told about it only the next day, around noon — especially since his parents typically contact him three or four times a day, and the incident supposedly happened at 4 p.m.
Now, a week later, she says her mother-in-law hasn’t improved.
“She has cried to my husband and requested he come over for lunch during his workday (his work is 10 minutes from his parents and we live over an hour away),” the post continued. “She has said ‘this is the worst thing to ever have.’ I have never had vertigo… I have spoken to some family members who have and they say it’s just dizziness and some nausea.”
The woman also questioned whether her mother-in-law’s symptoms matched her behavior.
“Now today my husband asks if they can come for a visit on Sunday. We live an hour away. Would an hour car ride be tolerable when you are suffering from vertigo? I have a 2-year-old and a 4-month-old… am I crazy to say she shouldn’t be holding either of them if she is still suffering so so badly, especially in case she falls.”
She ended her post by suggesting her mother-in-law might be “exaggerating to get attention from her beloved son who doesn’t give her his full attention anymore.”
“How would you approach this situation? Clearly I am not a fan AT ALL,” she added.
Many Reddit users sided with her, agreeing the behavior seemed excessive.
One commenter wrote: “I have chronic vertigo. When I have a flare up — I don’t travel in the car as it makes it worse. I rest in bed as much as possible as it makes me nauseous and walking around makes it worse. I have meds I take to help but it isn’t perfect. I definitely would not be going to other people’s houses nor would I hold a baby. She is acting way over the top for your husband’s attention.”
