Authorities are investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash that claimed the life of former New Jersey Assemblyman Alberto Coutinho early Sunday morning. The 56-year-old former legislator, a prominent figure in the state’s Portuguese community, died from injuries sustained in a fiery wreck at a major Newark intersection.

The collision occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. on March 29 at the intersection of McCarter Highway and South Street. According to preliminary reports from local officials, the impact resulted in a vehicle fire. Emergency responders rushed Coutinho to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the second vehicle involved in the crash survived with non-life-threatening injuries. While the Newark Police Department and local investigators remain on-site, the exact cause of the collision has not yet been determined. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has been contacted for further details regarding potential charges or contributing factors, such as speed or mechanical failure.

Coutinho represented New Jersey’s 29th Legislative District for more than five years. During his tenure in the Statehouse, he was recognized for his advocacy regarding:

  • Economic Development: Championing job creation initiatives across Essex County.
  • Workforce Reentry: Developing reforms to assist formerly incarcerated individuals in re-entering the labor market.
  • Urban Renewal: Securing funding for recreational spaces and infrastructure in Newark.

Beyond politics, Coutinho was the Chairman and Co-Founder of the Ironbound Soccer Club. His family was also instrumental in establishing the nationally recognized annual Portuguese Day Festival, an event Coutinho continued to oversee with personal dedication.

The news of Coutinho’s death prompted an immediate outpouring of grief from New Jersey’s political leadership.

Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka issued a statement Sunday, labeling Coutinho a “community giant” and a “central pillar” of the Ironbound neighborhood. “Al fought for job creation, recreational space, and workforce reentry reforms, all of which helped strengthen our city,” Baraka stated.

U.S. Senator Cory Booker also honored the former Assemblyman on social media, describing him as a “dear friend” whose life was defined by service. “From coaching countless kids in the Ironbound to leading with heart in our Statehouse, he was a servant in every sense,” Booker wrote.
