Representative Eric Swalwell (D-CA) announced his resignation from Congress on Monday, marking a definitive end to a political career that unraveled in less than two weeks. The decision comes just 24 hours after Swalwell abandoned his bid for California governor following a series of sexual misconduct allegations ranging from harassment to sexual assault.

The congressman’s rapid exit follows a wave of testimony from multiple women who describe a predatory pattern of behavior. Speaking to CBS News, accusers Ally Sammarco and Annika Albrecht described feeling “vindicated” by the resignation, asserting that Swalwell’s departure was a necessary step to prevent further harm.

The controversy ignited when influencer Cheyenne Hunt posted a video detailing an accuser’s story, which she says prompted more than 30 women to come forward with similar reports.

According to testimony provided to investigators and the media:

  • Ally Sammarco, a former campaign staffer, alleged that Swalwell used the guise of professional mentorship to initiate contact before sending unsolicited explicit photos, including an image of his genitals.
  • Annika Albrecht, coming forward for the first time, detailed how Swalwell targeted her via Snapchat following a college meeting, eventually attempting to lure her to a hotel room.
  • An Unnamed Staffer alleged in a San Francisco Chronicle report that she was sexually assaulted by Swalwell in 2019, an incident currently under investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.

Hunt, who previously worked on Capitol Hill, noted that a “whisper network” had long warned female staffers to avoid being alone with Swalwell or engaging with him on social media. Despite these private warnings, Swalwell maintained a public image as a “defender of women” and a devoted family man—a persona Sammarco now calls a “huge discrepancy.”

Swalwell has vehemently denied all claims, characterizing the accusations as “false” and “politically motivated.” However, sources suggest the lawmaker faced imminent expulsion proceedings from his colleagues had he not stepped down.

The fallout is far from over. While Swalwell’s legislative career has ended, the criminal investigation in New York remains active. Prosecutors are reportedly looking into separate allegations of assault that go beyond the initial public reports.

For the women who broke their silence, the goal remains accountability. “Justice won’t be until he can’t ever harm a woman ever again,” Albrecht stated. “He thought he was untouchable. He was wrong.”
