The gunman fatally shot by law enforcement after opening fire at a U.S. Border Patrol annex in McAllen, Texas, has been identified as Ryan Louis Mosqueda, a 27-year-old who was reported missing from Weslaco, Texas, just hours before the incident.
According to law enforcement, Mosqueda ambushed agents outside the Rio Grande Valley Border Patrol Sector building shortly before 6 a.m. Monday. He was armed with a rifle and wore tactical gear during the attack, which left three people injured, including a McAllen police officer who was shot in the knee. That officer is now in stable condition, authorities said.
“An hour or so after being reported missing, he was at that location opening fire at a federal building and our agents,” McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez told reporters.
No Known Motive, FBI Leading Investigation
Mosqueda had reportedly driven into McAllen in a vehicle with Michigan license plates, and his last known address was also in Michigan. Police confirmed they recovered additional firearms, ammunition, and gear from his car.
Authorities say no motive has yet been identified, and the incident remains under investigation by the FBI.
The Department of Homeland Security released a statement confirming that “an individual opened fire at the entrance of the U.S. Border Patrol sector annex” and that agents, along with local police, “neutralized the shooter.”
Temporary Airport Shutdown
The attack caused widespread disruptions, including a temporary lockdown of McAllen International Airport, located just minutes away from the shooting site.
“Due to off-airport safety concerns, vehicles and passengers were not permitted to enter the terminal or parking lot,” the City of McAllen posted on Facebook. “Access will remain restricted until further notice.”
As of Tuesday morning, normal operations at the airport had resumed. Passengers were advised to check directly with their airlines for the latest flight updates.
McAllen Police spokesperson John Sáenz told Telemundo 40 that the area remains an active crime scene and that further updates will follow once the investigation progresses.
