After spending nearly his entire life in a shelter, Nitro the rescue dog was finally adopted in early July. But just weeks later, he’s back where he started—resuming his seven-year search for a forever home.

Nitro had long been a resident at The Healthy Hearts and Paws Project, a nonprofit shelter in Warren, Ohio. His adoption earlier this summer seemed like the happy ending he deserved. Sadly, the match didn’t last. His new family returned him after one of their other dogs couldn’t adjust to Nitro’s presence.

“This is definitely not a post we wanted to make,” the shelter wrote in a Facebook update on July 27. “Our hearts break for him, as we truly believed he had finally found his forever home. But we remain hopeful for his future.”

Despite the setback, shelter staff are rallying behind Nitro, describing him as a fun-loving, affectionate, and active dog. He enjoys hiking, running, swimming in lakes, and playing with his toys—making him the perfect companion for an adventurous and patient owner.

Due to limited volunteers and years spent in a kennel, Nitro sometimes struggles to show his true personality during brief meet-and-greets. “The real him doesn’t always shine through immediately,” the shelter shared in a follow-up post. “He’ll be a different dog once he’s away from this environment.”

They’re encouraging potential adopters to give Nitro more than just one chance. “We ask for multiple visits, visits away from the shelter—someone willing to put the work in and not give up.”

Nitro also has a snuggly, loyal side and is known for being attentive and strong. What he needs most now is consistency, patience, and a family that sees him not as a project—but as a lifelong friend.

Anyone interested in adopting Nitro can contact The Healthy Hearts and Paws Project or reach out via their Facebook page.

“We’re still optimistic that Nitro’s perfect match is out there,” the shelter added. “This isn’t the end—just a detour. Seven years is far too long to wait.”
