Authorities in New York have confirmed that human remains discovered earlier this year belong to a missing Army veteran who vanished more than a decade ago.
The remains were located in upstate New York two months ago and have since been identified as those of John T. Humphrey, a 48-year-old resident of Oswego who disappeared in 2012, according to the New York State Police.
Investigators said a property owner in the town of New Haven, N.Y., found what appeared to be human remains while clearing a trail on wooded land. The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office responded, and subsequent DNA testing confirmed the remains as Humphrey’s.
Humphrey was last seen on June 2, 2012, near the New Haven Volunteer Fire Corporation shortly after leaving his apartment in nearby Scriba, N.Y., authorities said. The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System had described him as a “missing vulnerable adult.”
According to Syracuse.com, Humphrey had been released from a mental health facility the day before he went missing.
Officials said that no foul play is suspected in his death. The cause remains under review pending further examination.
“The New York State Police extend their condolences to the Humphrey family and thank the public and partnering agencies for their assistance over the years,” the agency said in a statement.
