On the same day Ashley Biden filed for divorce from her husband, Howard Krein, she posted songs and quotes on social media that seemed to hint at the breakup.
Ashley, 44, is the daughter of President Joe Biden. She filed divorce papers in Philadelphia on Monday, Aug. 11, ending her 13-year marriage to Krein, a plastic surgeon. That same day, her Instagram Stories gave a glimpse into how she might be feeling.
One post showed her walking through a park, giving a thumbs-up while Beyoncé’s song Freedom played in the background. The 2016 track is known as an anthem about empowerment and was used during Kamala Harris’ 2024 presidential campaign. She later deleted the post.
In another deleted post, Ashley shared Lauryn Hill’s 2002 song Freedom Time along with the quote:
“New life, new beginnings means new boundaries. New ways of being that won’t look or sound like they did before.”
Other Stories included a quote from Bob Marley:
“Let your smile change the world but don’t let the world change your smile.”
She also posted about the “full moon portal,” adding the caption: “The universe has my back.”
Later, Ashley shared photos from an event honoring her late half-brother Beau Biden and his foundation. President Biden attended, and Ashley wrote a message thanking people for supporting both her brother’s foundation and her father’s work. She called her dad “the best” and said she was grateful.

She ended her posts with photos of her dog, the full moon, and her phone lock screen showing the time 11:11 — a time many believe is lucky for making wishes.
Beau Biden had introduced Ashley to Krein in 2010. They started dating soon after and got engaged in 2011 with Joe Biden’s blessing. The couple married on June 2, 2012, in Delaware, in a ceremony blending her Catholic faith and his Jewish traditions.
At the time, then–Vice President Biden said Krein was “the right guy” for his daughter. Ashley has generally stayed out of the spotlight, but in 2024 she made her father emotional when she introduced him at the Democratic National Convention. She shared that before walking her down the aisle, her dad told her he would always be her best friend — something she says is still true today.
Krein was also with the Biden family in the Oval Office in 2024 when Joe Biden announced he would not run for reelection.
