A 15-month-old boy died after police found him unconscious inside a home in Jamaica, Queens, on Monday, Dec. 29.

Officers responded to a reported assault around 1:30 p.m. at a residence on 157th Street, where they discovered the child unresponsive and “covered in blood,” according to an NYPD spokesperson. A 28-year-old woman was also inside the home with slash wounds to her wrists, the spokesperson said.

Both were transported to Jamaica Hospital. The child was pronounced dead, while the woman was listed in stable condition.

The baby’s cause of death has not yet been determined. Police said the child showed no signs of stab wounds or blunt force trauma, and a law enforcement source indicated the blood found on the boy may have come from the woman, who was identified as the child’s mother.

The city’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will make the official determination on how the child died. As of 5:30 p.m. Monday, no arrests had been made.
