Body of Missing Preschool Special Education Assistant Found in Woods as Officials Release Her Cause of Death

A 55-year-old preschool special education assistant in South Carolina was found dead two days after she was reported missing, authorities confirmed.

Rebecca Beets was last seen on Saturday, Jan. 3, walking in the area of Novelty Drive in Greer, according to the Greer Police Department. After a search effort, police confirmed two days later that she had been located deceased.

The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were asked to assist Greer police with the missing person case at approximately 3:30 p.m. local time. During the search, the sheriff’s office’s drone team discovered Beets’ body.

The Greenville County Coroner’s Office later identified the remains as Beets. Following an autopsy, the coroner determined that her death was the result of suicide. Officials stated there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the case.

Beets worked as a preschool special education assistant at the Greenview Child Development Center, which is part of Greenville County Schools.

In a statement, the Greer Police Department expressed sympathy for those affected by her death. “We extend our deepest condolences to Ms. Beets’ family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” the department said, adding that the community is asked to keep them in their thoughts.

Authorities and school officials were contacted for comment but did not immediately respond.
