A 14-year-old boy who was accidentally shot in the head by another teenager at a home in central Texas on Christmas Day is showing encouraging signs of recovery as he remains hospitalized in intensive care. His mother has described his progress as nothing short of extraordinary.
Deputies responded to reports of a shooting at a residence outside Groesbeck at around 8:20 p.m. on Dec. 25, according to a statement from the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office. When authorities arrived, they found a 14-year-old boy suffering from a single gunshot wound to the head.
Investigators later determined that another 14-year-old boy inside the home believed a small-caliber rifle was unloaded when it discharged, striking the victim. Officials said the evidence indicates the shooting was accidental and not intentional.
The injured teen was airlifted to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Authorities also notified the Groesbeck Independent School District and said they would continue providing updates as the investigation proceeds.
In an interview with CBS affiliate KWTX, the victim’s mother identified her son as Ryen Harris-Contreras and shared updates on his condition. When he was first admitted to the ICU at Baylor Scott & White McLane Children’s Medical Center in Temple, Texas, doctors described his condition as critical. He underwent surgery that required the removal of part of his skull.
In recent days, however, his condition has improved. He has been taken off a breathing tube and has begun opening his eyes. His mother also shared a video showing Ryen squeezing a nurse’s hand.
“This isn’t just survival — this is a miracle,” she said in the interview. “When doctors said there was no hope, God whispered, ‘Watch what I can do.’”
The local school community has rallied around the teen and his family. Four days after the incident, the Groesbeck Independent School District announced that staff members had organized a “bake sale for hope” to support him.
“This bake sale is dedicated to supporting Ryen, a strong and courageous teenager who is currently hospitalized,” the district said in a statement about the fundraiser, scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 3. “Together, we can help ease the financial burden and surround this family with love, prayers, and encouragement.”
The district added that all proceeds would go toward supporting Ryen’s family as they remain by his side during his recovery.
