Candice Ybarra’s son, Lucas, could barely sit still he was so eager to try his very first oyster.
In a viral video, the 6-year-old is seen bouncing with excitement at a restaurant as a freshly prepared oyster is handed to him. Carefully holding the shell, he leans in and bravely slurps the oyster with a serious, focused expression.
“Take the whole thing! There you go,” his grandfather encourages from off camera. But the moment the oyster hits Lucas’ tongue, his enthusiasm disappears.
Lucas’ face quickly shifts from determination to panic as he struggles to keep the oyster in his mouth. Looking like he might be sick, he desperately tries to make it work before deciding there’s just no way — and promptly spits the oyster back out into his grandfather’s outstretched hand, sending everyone at the table into laughter.
“He was so excited to try all the seafood!! I don’t blame him,” Ybarra wrote in her caption.
In an interview, Ybarra says she grabbed her phone to record the moment because she had a feeling it was going to be memorable.

“Personally, I think oysters are gross, so I knew his first time trying one would get a funny reaction,” she says. “I did feel bad, though, because he was so excited and then — boom — total disappointment.”
Ybarra explains that Lucas and his siblings were visiting their grandfather in Florida when the big oyster moment happened.
“We took him and his siblings to Florida for the first time to stay with his grandpa (the one talking in the video), and he wanted to try all the seafood while we were there,” she says. “Lucas has always been obsessed with sea creatures since he was a baby.”
And aside from that one ill-fated oyster, Lucas turned out to be quite the adventurous eater.
“Lucas tried and loved almost everything else,” Ybarra continues. “He ate alligator, fried shrimp, calamari. He said the octopus tentacles were his favorite.”
As for oysters, though, Lucas hasn’t gone back for round two — and his mom is pretty sure he won’t.
“But I do not blame him,” she adds with a laugh. “I wouldn’t eat them myself!”
