A child has died after a vehicle hit a deer, sending the animal into the windshield of another car on a busy Pennsylvania road, authorities said.

The crash happened on Tuesday, Sept. 2, on Route 322 near Romig Road in West Bradford Township after a deer ran into the road and was struck by a car, according to ABC affiliate WPVI, NBC affiliate WCAU and CBS affiliate KYW.

The deer flew into the opposite lane and hit a second vehicle, landing on the windshield and injuring the child sitting in the front seat, KYW reported. The boy was taken to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The driver of the first vehicle did not stop and left the scene. Police believe the car was a black Toyota Sienna with heavy front-end damage, KYW reported. An investigation is ongoing.

Local residents told WPVI that deer-related crashes happen often, especially during months with less daylight.

“You have to drive a lot at night, especially in the winter season,” Clarabelle Hernandez said. “There are more animals moving for hibernation, and more people driving in the dark.”

The boy’s death has deeply affected the community. He was a student at Malvern Preparatory School in Malvern. The all-boys Catholic school had just started the 2025 school year last week.

“This loss is a profound tragedy that has impacted our students, faculty, staff, and community,” Dr. Patrick Sillup, head of school, said in a statement to the outlet.

“Out of respect for this young man and his family, we will not be sharing additional details at this time. Our immediate focus is on supporting his family and ensuring that our students, faculty, and staff are cared for as we grieve together.”

Police ask anyone with information about the crash to call Pennsylvania State Police Embreeville Barracks at 610-486-6280.
