Bride Faces Dilemma as Groom’s Mom’s Handmade Soaps for Wedding Smell Like ‘Absolute Trash’

A bride-to-be has found herself in a very smelly problem.

In a post shared on Reddit’s “Advice,” “Wedding,” and “Wedding Drama” forums, a bride asked other users how to deal with an awkward — and stinky — situation with her future mother-in-law.

The groom’s mom had made handmade soaps to give as wedding favors. While it was a kind idea, the soaps didn’t turn out as planned.

“My MIL (mother-in-law) sweetly handmade soaps as wedding favors for our wedding — which was the kindest gesture… except they smell like ‘plastic turd,’ ” the bride explained.

Because the groom’s mother lives in another state, the couple didn’t see or smell the soaps until it was too late to change the plan.

Now, the bride feels “stuck.” She doesn’t want to hurt her future mother-in-law’s feelings by saying the soaps smell bad, but she also doesn’t want her wedding guests to be put off by them.

“On one hand, I don’t want to hurt her feelings because she put in so much time and love,” she wrote. “On the other hand, they smell so bad I’m genuinely embarrassed to give them to guests.”

The bride gave Reddit users three possible choices:
A) Give them out anyway
B) Hide them later so guests don’t take them home
C) Tell her mother-in-law the truth and risk upsetting her

Most Redditors agreed on option A — give out the soaps — but with a twist.

“You could attach a little tag to the soaps or a little sign ‘lovingly hand made by MIL (mother-in-law)’ so when people take them and they’re stinky, they know it’s not you,” one popular comment read in the “Advice” forum.

Others pointed out that wedding guests often forget to take favors home anyway. If the soaps are simply placed in baskets or on tables, they may end up being left behind. Some also said this is really the groom’s problem to solve, since it’s his mother.
