A man set to be married on Sydney Harbour won’t be walking down the aisle this weekend — he’ll be staying behind bars.
Reece Iaria, 28, was refused release from custody during a court appearance just one day before his wedding, which had been scheduled at the exclusive Pier One on Sydney Harbor, according to 9News in Australia.
His bride-to-be — who was not identified — appeared distraught as she left Penrith courthouse after the judge declined to free her fiancé, footage obtained by the outlet showed.
Asked by a 9News reporter about the fact that his client would miss the wedding despite it already being “booked and paid for,” Iaria’s attorney, Ahmed Dib, responded: “It’s unfortunate the situation, but let’s see what we can do with the appeal process.”
Iaria is facing 15 charges tied to a major drug supply investigation under Strike Force Torino, which was formed to target alleged drug supply and money laundering, per 9News.
As part of the probe, officers reportedly seized 4 grams of cocaine and 2 kilograms of lidocaine, a substance used in the manufacturing of cocaine. Police also allegedly found a Glock-style gel plastic pistol hidden inside a golf bag, per 9 News.
When asked whether Iaria would be “defending the charges,” Dib said: “Absolutely, he will definitely be defended. It appears to be a really weak prosecution case.”

Iaria’s parents had offered $2.5 million in an effort to secure his release from pretrial detention so he could attend the planned ceremony, but the proposal failed to sway the court.
“That was a substantial surety,” Dib said of the offer. “Obviously, we’re very upset with the outcome.”
Following the ruling, Iaria is expected to remain in pretrial detention until at least April. It’s not clear whether the couple plans to postpone the wedding.
Iaria was arrested after police executed a search warrant at a property in Penrith owned by National Rugby League (NRL) Nathan Cleary, who was believed to have known Iaria, the Australian outlet reported. The $1.05 million investment property was purchased by Cleary in 2018, according to news.com.au.
There is no reason to believe that Cleary was linked to or had any knowledge of the incident, per 9 News.
