A Colorado bride facing a rare cancer diagnosis got the wedding she’d always hoped for — thanks to a team of hospital staff who turned a hallway into a heartfelt ceremony space.

Aliana Gleason married her partner of 11 years, Bailey Gleason, after learning she had a rare form of cancer with limited treatment options, according to 9 News.

She was diagnosed with a sarcoma — a broad group of cancers that begin in the bones and soft tissues, per Mayo Clinic — and it had spread to her spine, Matt Turrie, a nurse manager in the hospital’s oncology department, told the outlet.

After receiving the news, the couple decided they didn’t want to wait any longer. They told 9 News they had always planned to marry, but had been holding off until they could afford the kind of celebration they pictured.

“Eleven years and we have wanted to get married for a long, long time,” Bailey told the outlet. “But we always said that we would do it when we had enough money for a nice ring and all the decorations we wanted and everything.”

“With some recent developments in our lives, we are thinking that life is short and that we want to be married,” he added.

When staff at HCA HealthOne Swedish — where Aliana was receiving treatment — heard about the engagement, they stepped in to make the wedding happen, gifting the couple a ceremony at the hospital.

“There is not a lot you can always do, so when there is something you can do, by supporting the family, supporting the patient, being able to put on something like this, a wedding, a celebration,” Turrie told 9 News, explaining what inspired the team.

He added that the staff had seen “a lot of fight” in Aliana, and even though the updates hadn’t been easy, “every day she wakes up, and she is smiling.” Helping create a joyful milestone, he said, was the least they could do.

In video captured by 9 News, hospital employees lined the hallway holding white sunflowers, while balloons and streamers decorated the makeshift aisle as they waited for Aliana to arrive.

“I’m just blown away. It was amazing and made me feel really supported and see the goodness in people, besides just the few I know are good,” Aliana said of the staff’s efforts.

The wedding came together quickly — scheduled just two days after the engagement. Aliana wore a white gown with silver jewelry, including a tiara and a bright diamond ring. Bailey wore a blue suit with a purple tie.

Throughout her diagnosis and treatment, Bailey stayed by her side — and Aliana said her vows reflected that same commitment in return.

“We are going through some [of] the hardest things you can go through right now in our lives, not just medically, in every aspect and… it was a promise to just stand next to each other and face the storm together,” she said.

In the end, Aliana said the day felt exactly right.

“It feels like it was supposed to be this way,” she told the outlet. Bailey agreed: “It doesn’t feel like it’s not the wedding we wanted, it feels perfect.”
