Bride’s Grandfather Was Given Just Days to Live Before Her Nuptials, So She Brought Wedding Surprise to Him 

A bride is choosing love amid grief.

When Alexis Cowan was planning her Valentine’s Day wedding in McKinney, Texas, the 25-year-old hoped her grandfather, Jim Mahan, 75, would play a special role in the ceremony. After her father and stepfather walked her down the aisle, Mahan was set to be the one to give her away.

But just days before the wedding, everything changed. Mahan was diagnosed with acute leukemia, a fast-moving cancer of the blood and bone marrow.

“It broke my heart,” Cowan says. “He was given a week to live.”

Knowing time was short, Cowan focused on finding another way to include him in the moments that mattered. On Feb. 3, while he was hospitalized at Medical City Dallas Hospital, she surprised him by visiting in her mother’s wedding dress—worn at her 1999 wedding.

“He was so happy to see me in my mom’s dress,” Cowan recalls. “He was emotional and just in awe.”

She later shared video clips of the visit on Instagram, writing that she would cherish the day and every moment they had left. In the footage, Cowan wipes away tears in a private moment before stepping into her grandfather’s hospital room. Mahan recognizes the gown right away. From his hospital bed, he embraces her and gently pats her back.

In her caption, Cowan reflected on faith, gratitude, and the bittersweet weight of the moment, noting that deep love often brings deep loss.

Five days later, on Feb. 8, Mahan died.

Less than a week after that, Cowan married Jeremy Foster, 23, on Feb. 14. She says her grandfather cared deeply for Foster and was excited for their future together.

Cowan says she and her grandfather shared a bond that shaped who she is—a relationship she plans to carry with her always.

“I was his shadow,” she says. As a child, she loved tools as much as she loved pageants. They shared an affection for classic cars, and she admired how he could fix nearly anything with his hands.

“He is the grandfather every kid dreams of having,” Cowan says. She remembers him teaching her life’s basics—how to ride a bike, tie her shoes, and change a tire for the first time. His influence, she says, still guides her.

“I have an amazing dad and stepdad,” she adds, “but my papa played a huge role in who I am today.”
