Thiel College is mourning the loss of 21-year-old student-athlete Toby Atwood, who collapsed and died while participating in the Presque Isle Half Marathon in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Sunday, July 20.

In a statement, the college described Atwood as a “rising senior, an accomplished member of the women’s tennis team, and a campus leader,” noting she was a “standout in the classroom and on the court.”

A native of Kittanning, Pa., Atwood was double-majoring in business administration and accounting. She played No. 1 singles on Thiel’s women’s tennis team and served as a co-captain. She also held the role of president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and was the recipient of the prestigious 2024 “Tomcat Award” for excellence in athletics, academics, and leadership.

“Toby was a shining light in our community,” said Michael McKinney, Vice President for Student Life and Athletics. “Her presence touched the lives of so many, and she will be deeply missed.”

In addition to her athletic and academic achievements, Atwood was a dedicated member of Zeta Tau Alpha women’s fraternity, which also issued a heartfelt tribute.

“Toby was a light in everyone’s life,” the fraternity said in a statement. “She was always there when people needed her, never afraid to speak her mind, and consistently lifted those around her. She was seen as a role model, mentor, and friend. There will forever be a hole in our hearts and in our chapter.”

The exact cause of her death has not been released, according to CBS News.

Memorial services will be held Thursday and Friday at Center Hill Covenant Brethren Church in Kittanning, with a funeral service scheduled for Saturday morning.

Thiel College encouraged students and the wider campus community to seek support and comfort during what it called a “heartbreaking time.”

“We extend our deepest condolences to Toby’s family, friends, teammates, coaches, and everyone whose life she touched,” McKinney added.
