Congresswoman Lauren Boebert is speaking out after her 20-year-old son, Tyler Boebert, received a misdemeanor citation for child abuse in connection with an incident involving his own young son.
According to a report from Denver outlet Westword, Tyler Boebert — the eldest of Rep. Boebert’s four sons — was cited for “criminal negligence” following a July 11 incident. The citation was issued by the Windsor Police Department, located about an hour north of Denver. A court summons confirms that no one was injured or killed during the event.
In a statement to PEOPLE, Rep. Boebert, 38, said the situation was the result of a misunderstanding: “Tyler has been doing a great job getting his life on track as a father and citizen over the past year. Unfortunately, this event stems from a miscommunication on monitoring my young grandson that recently led to him getting out of our house.”
Authorities have not publicly disclosed further details about the incident. The Windsor Police Department and Weld County District Attorney’s Office did not respond to requests for comment as of Sunday evening.
Tyler Boebert became a father at 17 and has faced prior legal trouble. In early 2024, he was arrested on a series of charges related to vehicle trespasses and identity theft. At the time, the Rifle Police Department reported he faced multiple felony and misdemeanor counts, including four felony charges for criminal possession of ID documents and one felony count of conspiracy.
Rep. Boebert addressed those earlier charges in a statement to PEOPLE, saying, “It breaks my heart to see my child struggling, especially when he has been provided multiple opportunities to get his life on track. I will never give up on him.”
As part of a plea agreement in October 2024, Tyler pleaded guilty to one count of attempted identity theft, while all other charges were dismissed.
Tyler’s recent citation follows a tumultuous period for the Boebert family. Just weeks before his February arrest, his father — Rep. Boebert’s ex-husband, Jayson Boebert — was also taken into custody after a public dispute involving the former couple. He was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor assault and criminal mischief, though he was released the same day. Later, Jayson alleged that Rep. Boebert struck him during a confrontation at a restaurant, prompting a police investigation.
Rep. Boebert filed for divorce in the spring of 2024, citing irreconcilable differences. She represented Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District from 2021 through January 2025, before successfully running for the 4th Congressional District in the 2024 election.
She shares four sons — Tyler, Brody, Kaydon, and Roman — with Jayson Boebert.
In her recent statement, Rep. Boebert reiterated that her son will face the consequences of his actions: “As an adult and father, Tyler will take responsibility for his actions and should be held accountable for poor decisions just like any other citizen.”
