Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., criticized the Trump administration’s policies on food assistance in a recent interview, calling its approach to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) “cruel.” She condemned the administration for enforcing work requirements on beneficiaries seeking public aid.

The government shutdown—now stretching beyond a month—originated from a deadlock between Republicans and Democrats over a continuing resolution (CR) to fund federal operations. The conflict centers on healthcare provisions: Democrats argue that removing their proposal will raise Americans’ insurance premiums, while Republicans contend that keeping it in would expand coverage to undocumented immigrants.

In response to a federal court order, the Trump administration announced plans to allocate billions in emergency funding to sustain SNAP benefits temporarily. The move comes amid a broader debate about public assistance programs and their recipients, as administration officials claim these programs are frequently misused by undocumented individuals.

After MSNBC aired comments from Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins about planned reforms to SNAP, host Catherine Rampell criticized the administration’s handling of the shutdown. “I guess one way to keep people from fraudulently claiming benefits is by making sure no one can claim benefits, no?” she remarked on The Weekend: Primetime.

Pressley replied, “First and foremost, this is the most corrupt administration in history. And then they’re cruel enough to create work requirements for hungry people to get SNAP.”

The proposal to require able-bodied individuals to work in order to receive food assistance has sparked fierce partisan debate. Earlier this year, House Republicans advanced a bill that included deep cuts to food stamp programs, transferred some costs to the states, and tightened eligibility rules—measures that aligned closely with former President Donald Trump’s policy agenda.

Pressley further condemned Republican lawmakers during her MSNBC appearance, saying, “For the last month, they have not shown up for work, and they’ve been on a taxpayer-funded vacation. I’ve been in Congress seven years. I came in as a freshman in the 118th in the midst of a government shutdown, and we never left. We stayed working and negotiating because that’s what the American people deserve. It’s just shameful.”

A White House spokesperson countered her remarks in a statement to Fox News Digital: “President Trump has repeatedly made clear he wants the government reopened. Hardworking Americans are missing out on paychecks and benefits because Democrats have refused to reopen the government. Despite their obstruction, President Trump has found ways to fund WIC, pay our troops, and ease Democrat-inflicted pain in other ways. Democrats could stop hurting the American people by reopening the government at any time.”
