CNN’s chief data analyst Harry Enten says he’s shocked by a dramatic shift in national sentiment, particularly among Democrats.
Citing new Gallup polling released Friday, Enten noted that only 36% of Democrats now say they are “extremely” or “very” proud to be American—a steep decline from 80% in 2015, when Barack Obama was still in office.
“That number has absolutely plummeted,” Enten said during his segment. “It’s the lowest figure we’ve seen this century. Pride among Democrats has been cut by more than half in just 10 years, especially now that Donald Trump is back in the White House.”
He singled out Gen Z voters—those born in 1997 or later—as a major driver of the shift. According to Gallup, 32% of Gen Z respondents say they have “little” or “no pride” in being American.
“I honestly never thought I’d see these numbers,” Enten said. “Compared to where we were a decade ago, this is a stunning reversal.”
By contrast, Republicans remain consistently patriotic. In 2015, 90% said they were proud to be American—a figure that has ticked up slightly to 92% in 2025, according to Gallup.
“Republicans continue to express strong national pride,” Enten said. “But among Democrats, especially younger ones, those feelings have dropped through the floor.”
