A Florida family has been given an emotional second chance with their beloved dog, Sugar — a reunion they once thought impossible.
Sugar, a cherished Maltipoo, disappeared in 2021 after slipping out of the Sagarra family’s Miami home. Despite desperate efforts to find her, including a $1,000 reward and citywide searches, the trail went cold.
Then came a devastating call.
“A man told us he saw her get hit by a car going 70 to 80 miles an hour,” Albania Sagarra told local station WPLG. The vivid, tragic account convinced the family Sugar was gone. Grief-stricken, they slowly came to accept they would never see her again.
But in June 2025 — four years after her disappearance — a miracle happened.
An anonymous individual dropped off a small dog at a local shelter near the Sagarra home. When staff scanned her for a microchip, they discovered Sugar’s identity and contacted her astonished family.
No one knows exactly where Sugar has been all this time, but her condition offered clues. The once-lively pup was underweight, sick, and showing signs of neglect. Her family now fears she may have been stolen and poorly cared for in the years since she went missing.
“I’m just so thankful. This feels like something out of a dream — like a resurrection,” Albania told WFTV.
Although Sugar’s health has drastically declined — she has since been diagnosed with advanced heart and kidney disease — her family is focused on making her remaining time filled with love and comfort.
“She’s not the same physically,” Albania admitted. “But she’s back where she belongs. And for however long we have, we’re going to cherish every moment.”
Despite the unanswered questions and heartbreaking condition Sugar returned in, the Sagarras say they are grateful to have their dog home.
“She’s with the people who love her most. That’s what matters now,” Albania said.
