President Donald Trump has officially confirmed the construction of a “massive” underground military complex situated directly beneath a new, 90,000-square-foot White House ballroom. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, March 29, the 79-year-old president characterized the high-profile architectural project as a dual-purpose facility designed to serve both diplomatic and strategic defense needs.

During the briefing, Trump unveiled architectural drawings for the structure, which he claimed is currently ahead of schedule. The president revealed that the visible ballroom—a project now estimated to cost $400 million—effectively serves as a cover for the more significant military installation below.

“The military is building a big complex under the ballroom,” Trump stated, noting that the project’s existence became public due to recent litigation. “The ballroom essentially becomes a shed for what’s being built under the military.”

The facility is designed with unprecedented security specifications. According to the president, the structure will feature bulletproof glass and a drone-proof roof and exterior. While the surface level is intended to host state dinners and inaugurations, the subterranean levels reportedly house a revamped, top-secret bunker system.

The project has faced significant scrutiny following a 100% budget increase. Originally slated for $200 million, the price tag jumped to $400 million in December. This surge followed the president’s decision to replace the initial architectural firm due to disputes over the “size and scope” of the ballroom’s footprint.

In a Cabinet meeting on Thursday, March 26, Trump asserted that the U.S. military requested the expansion “more than anybody.” He dismissed the controversy surrounding the project’s secrecy, blaming “unpatriotic” individuals for leaking details of the construction.

“It was supposed to be secret, but it became un-secret because of people that are really unpatriotic saying things,” Trump said during the meeting.

Despite the president’s claims of military necessity, the Pentagon has not issued a formal statement regarding the specific requirements or the strategic purpose of the “massive complex.”

The administration argues the ballroom is a “desperately needed” upgrade to the White House grounds, intended to replace the temporary tents frequently used for visiting foreign dignitaries. “You won’t have tents sitting on the wet White House lawn,” Trump added. “It’s going to be the greatest ballroom anywhere in the world.”

The White House expects the project to be completed ahead of upcoming diplomatic summits, though legal challenges regarding the transparency of the construction and its funding sources remain ongoing.
