President Donald Trump hailed the Senate’s narrow approval of his sweeping tax and spending legislation on Tuesday, calling the result “music to my ears” during a visit to a controversial migrant detention facility in Florida nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz.”

The bill, dubbed the “Big Beautiful Bill,” passed by the slimmest margin — 50 to 50 — with Vice President JD Vance casting the tie-breaking vote. Three Republican senators — Thom Tillis, Susan Collins, and Rand Paul — joined all Democrats in opposing it.

“The big not-so-beautiful bill has passed,” Sen. Paul remarked afterward.

The legislation now heads to the House of Representatives, where a vote is expected Wednesday.

Trump vs. Musk: A Renewed Clash

Trump’s legislative victory was overshadowed in part by a renewed clash with tech billionaire Elon Musk, who has fiercely criticized the bill, arguing it would drive up the national debt and undercut the cost-saving efforts of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which he currently leads.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Musk blasted lawmakers who supported the bill, calling it “utterly insane and destructive.” He threatened to oppose them in their next primaries and mock them publicly, writing, “They should hang their heads in shame.”

He also floated the idea of creating a new political party, calling America’s current leadership the “PORKY PIG PARTY.”

Trump fired back on Truth Social, accusing Musk of being dependent on federal subsidies for his businesses. “Without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa,” Trump wrote. “No more Rocket launches, Satellites, or Electric Car Production — and our Country would save a FORTUNE.”

Asked later if he would consider deporting Musk, Trump replied, “I don’t know, we’ll have to take a look.”

Despite Musk’s vocal opposition, he had previously spent an estimated $250 million supporting Trump’s reelection and took charge of DOGE, which reportedly slashed 120,000 federal jobs.

After a flurry of inflammatory posts, Musk walked back some of his comments, writing, “I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week. They went too far.” Trump later told the New York Post he appreciated the gesture, calling it “very nice.”

Alligator Alcatraz: Symbol of Trump’s Hardline Immigration Agenda

Trump made his remarks about the bill’s passage while visiting a newly established migrant detention center in Ochopee, Florida, nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz” due to its remote Everglades location and surrounding swamp terrain.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the facility is intentionally isolated: “There’s only one road in, and the only way out is a one-way flight. It’s surrounded by dangerous wildlife and unforgiving terrain. Yes, a detention center surrounded by alligators — that’s a deterrent.”

Capable of housing up to 5,000 detainees, the center reflects Trump’s renewed emphasis on strict immigration enforcement during his second term. He has even floated the idea of reopening the original Alcatraz prison in California as part of his broader immigration crackdown.

What’s Next for the Bill

While the Senate’s passage marks a major win for Trump, the bill still faces challenges in the House. Republican leaders hope to push it through without changes to avoid further delays and meet Trump’s goal of signing it into law by July 4 — potentially setting the stage for a dramatic Independence Day signing ceremony.

With opposition still simmering — from Democrats, fiscal conservatives, and Musk — the political stakes remain high. But for now, Trump is savoring a hard-fought Senate victory and staying firmly in the spotlight.
