President Donald Trump has weighed in on reports that George Clooney, his wife Amal, and their twin children have become French citizens, calling the development “good news” in a sharply worded social media post.

In a message shared on Truth Social on Wednesday, Dec. 31, Trump criticized the actor and human rights lawyer while referencing France’s immigration challenges. He wrote that George and Amal Clooney had “officially become citizens of France,” adding that the country is “sadly, in the midst of a major crime problem” due to what he described as poor immigration policies.

Trump also revisited Clooney’s July 2024 New York Times op-ed, in which the actor urged then-President Joe Biden to step aside following a widely criticized debate performance and allow Vice President Kamala Harris to pursue the Democratic nomination. In his post, Trump mocked Clooney’s political judgment and suggested the actor had aligned himself with losing candidates.

Continuing his criticism, Trump claimed Clooney had gained more attention for his political commentary than for his film career, dismissing his work as “totally mediocre” and concluding his post with a familiar campaign slogan.

Clooney’s most recent film, Jay Kelly, was released in theaters and on Netflix in December, with the actor starring as the title character, himself a famous performer.

In a recent interview with Variety, Clooney addressed CBS News’ settlement with Trump. The network agreed in July to pay $16 million to Trump’s future presidential library to resolve a lawsuit alleging deceptive editing of a 2024 60 Minutes appearance by Kamala Harris. Clooney criticized the decision, arguing that media organizations should have fought the lawsuits rather than settling them.

Clooney also reflected on his personal history with Trump before the latter entered politics, describing him as someone he once knew socially. He said Trump’s demeanor changed significantly after launching his political career.

A longtime critic of Trump, Clooney has previously condemned the former president’s actions surrounding the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, saying the Trump name would forever be linked to insurrection. Amal Clooney has likewise spoken out, criticizing Trump’s rhetoric toward the press and warning that it put journalists around the world at greater risk.

The Clooneys currently reside in France, citing concerns about raising their children in Los Angeles and within Hollywood culture. According to a French naturalization decree published in December 2025 by Journal officiel, the family was granted French citizenship that month.

In an October interview with GQ, Clooney described their life in rural France, saying the slower pace and distance from screens have given their children a healthier, more grounded upbringing.
