Donald Trump slammed for ‘cruel’ remarks about ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ where he plans to hold undocumented immigrants

Donald Trump is facing backlash for his controversial comments about a new migrant detention facility in Florida, mockingly referred to as “Alligator Alcatraz.” Critics have labeled his remarks “inhumane” and “disturbing,” adding to growing outrage over his administration’s immigration crackdown.

Since returning to the presidency in January, Trump has aggressively pursued sweeping immigration enforcement measures. In his inaugural speech, he vowed to “immediately halt all illegal entry” and deport “millions and millions of criminal aliens.”

“We will begin the process of returning millions of criminal aliens back to the places from which they came,” he declared.

His administration has since launched what it’s calling the largest mass deportation program in U.S. history, led by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The raids have triggered nationwide protests, sparking criticism from human rights groups and immigration advocates.

‘Alligator Alcatraz’: Florida Facility Sparks Alarm

In the latest move tied to Trump’s immigration policy, Florida lawmakers have proposed a new detention center on an abandoned airstrip in the swamplands near Miami. The facility, expected to open in July or August, will hold approximately 1,000 detainees.

The nickname “Alligator Alcatraz” came after Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said the swampy terrain naturally discourages escape:

“You don’t need to invest that much in the perimeter. If people get out, there’s not much waiting for them other than alligators and pythons.”

Trump appeared to endorse that logic in a shocking exchange with Fox News reporters on July 1. When asked whether escapees could be eaten by alligators, the president smirked:

“I guess that’s the concept. Snakes are fast, but alligators… we’re going to teach them how to run away from an alligator. Don’t run in a straight line—run like this,” he said, making a zigzag motion with his hand.

Online Backlash: “This Sounds Like a Horror Film”

Trump’s comments drew swift and fierce condemnation online.

“When your immigration policy sounds like the plot of a dystopian horror movie, maybe, just maybe, you’re the villain,” one user posted.

Another added:

“The MAGA movement is evil. Unspeakably cruel is now a feature, not a bug.”

Comparisons to historic atrocities were also made, with one critic writing:

“Donnie is treating the idea of a concentration camp on U.S. soil as a joke. I’m sure something similar was said in Germany during the 1930s.”

More to Come? DeSantis Hints at Expansion

At a press conference last week, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis hinted that the state may replicate the model elsewhere. Referring to Camp Blanding, a former Army training base over 300 miles north, he said:

“We’ll probably also do something similar up at Camp Blanding.”

Despite outrage from civil rights advocates and legal experts, Trump’s allies continue to defend the move, touting it as a “cost-effective” solution to what they describe as a “border crisis.”

The White House has not yet responded to requests for comment.
