In a notable realignment of Florida’s political map, Democrat Emily Gregory has captured State House District 87, unseating Republican control in the legislative territory that encompasses Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.

The Associated Press and CNN projected Gregory as the victor late Tuesday, marking a rare Democratic breakthrough in a region synonymous with high-profile conservative power. Gregory, a first-time candidate with a background in public health and small business, defeated Republican Jon Maples, who ran with the explicit endorsement of the President.

The flip of District 87 serves as a symbolic blow to the Republican establishment in Palm Beach County. By securing the district that houses the “Winter White House,” Gregory has demonstrated a shifting appetite among voters in historically red-leaning coastal enclaves.

“I’m honored that the voters of District 87 have placed their trust in me,” Gregory stated. “Tonight’s result sends a clear message that people want Florida to move in a new direction, one where leaders focus on lowering costs and standing up for working families.”

Gregory’s victory is not an isolated event but part of a nascent trend of Democratic gains in Florida’s urban and suburban corridors. This win follows the December election of Democrat Eileen Higgins as Mayor of Miami. Higgins made history as the first Democrat to hold the office in decades, defeating Emilio Gonzalez, a former member of the Trump administration’s Homeland Security transition team.

While Florida has recently been viewed as a Republican stronghold, these successive flips suggest a tightening of the margins in key metropolitan areas.

Political analysts suggest that Maples’ loss, despite Trump’s endorsement, indicates that local issues—such as the rising cost of living and healthcare access—may be outweighing national partisan loyalty in South Florida. Gregory’s platform leaned heavily on her public health expertise, a strategy that clearly resonated with the District 87 electorate.

As the state prepares for the upcoming legislative session, Gregory’s presence in Tallahassee will provide a new Democratic voice in a region long dominated by the GOP.
