President Donald Trump said he plans to send $1,776 checks to U.S. military service members, calling the one-time payment a “Warrior Dividend” timed to arrive before Christmas and framed as a tribute to the nation’s founding.
Speaking from the White House during a televised address, Trump said the payment is meant to honor 1776, the year the Declaration of Independence was signed.
“Military service members will receive a special we call ‘warrior dividend’ before Christmas, a warrior dividend in honor of our nation’s founding in 1776,” Trump said from the Diplomatic Room. “Nobody deserves it more than our military.”
One-Time Payment and Funding Details
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has directed the Pentagon to distribute $2.6 billion in a one-time housing allowance supplement to eligible service members in pay grade O-6 and below, a senior administration official told Newsweek.
The official said Congress appropriated $2.9 billion to the Department of War to supplement the Basic Allowance for Housing entitlement within The One Big Beautiful Bill, which Trump signed into law earlier this year.
“This one-time payment exemplifies the department’s ongoing commitment to improving the housing and quality of life for our military members and their families,” the official said.
During his remarks, Trump argued the payments were supported by revenue generated through his tariff policies, along with funding from the “One Big, Beautiful Bill” he said he signed into law on July 4.
Broader Remarks and Political Response
Trump spent a significant portion of the address criticizing the previous administration while outlining what he described as major accomplishments since returning to office.
“For the last four years, the United States was ruled by politicians who fought only for insiders, illegal aliens, career criminals, corporate lobbyists, prisoners, terrorists and above all foreign nations which took advantage of us at levels never seen before,” he said.
“Over the past 11 months, we have brought more positive change to Washington than any administration in American history. There has never been anything like it. I think most would agree,” he said.
Economic data released in September showed U.S. inflation reaching 3 percent for the first time since January, while consumer confidence fell to its lowest level since April amid concerns about the cost of living, employment, and the broader economy.
“Now, under our leadership, they [prices] are all coming down and coming down fast,” Trump said. “Democrat politicians also sent the cost of groceries soaring, but we are solving that too.”
Democrats pushed back, calling the address “an attempt to explain his failure to tackle the issues facing Americans,” and arguing Trump and Republicans are worried about the 2026 midterm elections.
“Donald Trump has lost the economy, is losing his mind, and is going to lose the midterms. Tonight, Americans watched him and asked themselves: ‘This is the guy in charge?’” Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin said.
“Let’s summarize Trump’s first year back in office: He skyrocketed prices with his chaotic trade war, triggered mass layoffs, and priced millions out of health care—all while digging through the pockets of taxpayers to give massive tax cuts to CEOs and billionaires,” Martin said.
