The father of Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown was arrested early Thursday in Las Vegas on charges of attempted murder, authorities said.

Quenton Marselles Brown, 57, was taken into custody and booked into the Clark County Detention Center, according to jail records reviewed by PEOPLE.

Officials from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded around 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, to a stabbing on the 1500 block of South Buffalo Drive. They discovered a man suffering from multiple stab wounds, according to a police report obtained by PEOPLE.

The victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Brown was located shortly afterward “a short distance away” and detained.

A dispute over a minor parking lot incident at All American Park allegedly triggered the confrontation, according to an arrest report obtained by NBC affiliate KSNV.

Police found Brown, who goes by Marselles, involved in a fight with the victim.

The victim’s girlfriend told authorities that they were inside their vehicle when an SUV parked nearby and its passenger door hit their car, KSNV reported.

She told police that Brown then asked her boyfriend, “if he wanted to go,” sparking a fight. According to the report, Brown “briskly walked after him while producing [an] unknown object from his right side,” and “swung his arm in a straight stabbing motion and struck [the boyfriend] in his back.”

The victim — identified by CBS affiliate KLAS-TV as Cross Tupuola, a 28-year-old youth football coach — sustained multiple stab wounds to his back and stomach and underwent several surgeries.

Witnesses told police Brown allegedly stabbed Tupuola as many as 25 times. At the time of his arrest, the 7-ft., 300-lb. Brown had “cuts, scrapes” and a broken toe, KLAS reported.

Brown made his first court appearance Thursday, with bail set at $300,000. It is not immediately clear whether he has been released.

According to KLAS, Brown was previously arrested for battery in 2016 and may have an outstanding warrant in Georgia.

The Celtics star’s father is a former professional boxer who held the 2016 WBU World Champion title and the 2015 WBU C.A.M. Heavyweight Championship.

Brown’s next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 26 at 8:30 a.m.
