Former Virginia lieutenant governor Justin Fairfax fatally shot his estranged wife before killing himself early Thursday, April 16, in what authorities describe as a murder-suicide that has stunned political circles and revived scrutiny of his personal and political past.

Police in Fairfax County said the shooting occurred just after midnight at the couple’s home in Annandale. The victim, Cerina Fairfax, was found dead at the scene. Their teenage children were inside the house at the time, and their son placed the 911 call, according to Police Chief Kevin Davis.

Investigators said the couple had been living separately within the same home amid a “messy divorce,” sleeping in different bedrooms.

The incident stands in stark contrast to Fairfax’s public record. During and after his tenure from 2018 to 2022, he repeatedly warned of a growing gun violence crisis in the United States, calling for expanded mental health access and stricter firearm controls. In multiple public statements and social media posts, he described gun violence as a “national health crisis” and urged systemic reforms to prevent harm.

Davis described Fairfax as a “rising star politically,” calling the incident a “fall from grace for a relatively high-profile family.”

Fairfax’s political trajectory had already been marked by controversy. In 2019, while serving as lieutenant governor, he faced multiple sexual assault allegations stemming from the early 2000s. Fairfax denied the claims and remained in office, though the accusations derailed what many saw as a potential path to the governorship. He later ran in the 2022 Democratic primary but finished fourth.

The allegations surfaced during a turbulent period in Virginia politics, when then-Gov. Ralph Northam faced backlash over a blackface scandal. Northam ultimately completed his term, while Fairfax’s political standing weakened.

In recent years, Fairfax had shifted toward legal advocacy, representing victims of gun violence, including families affected by the 2019 Virginia Beach shooting, which left 12 people dead. He also spoke out after subsequent shootings, including incidents tied to the University of Virginia, emphasizing the societal toll of violence.

Northam said in a statement that he and his wife were “devastated” by the news and extended condolences to the Fairfax children and family.

Authorities have not released further details about the motive. The investigation remains ongoing.
