A Georgia woman was arrested Thursday, Jan. 29, after authorities alleged she put alcohol in a baby bottle and gave it to her three-month-old son, who later died.
Omayrilin Colon, 37, was taken into custody on charges of murder and cruelty to children in connection with the Oct. 15 death of her son, according to an Atlanta Police Department press release.
Police said officers responded to a home in the 2200 block of Perry Boulevard Northwest shortly before 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14, where they found the infant not breathing. The baby was taken to Scottish Wright Children’s Hospital, where he died the next day, according to the release.
In January, the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office notified investigators that the child’s toxicology testing showed “a high level of alcohol” in his blood, police said. Based on those findings, the medical examiner ruled the cause of death a homicide, according to the release.
Per 11Alive, the infant’s blood-alcohol level was 0.179 — more than double the legal limit for an adult — citing the medical examiner’s office.
An arrest affidavit cited by 11Alive said Colon told investigators she did not give the baby alcohol. However, emergency room physicians and the medical examiner concluded alcohol had been present in the baby’s bottle, according to the outlet.
Colon is being held without bond, WSB-TV reported.
