A gas station clerk in Michigan is being credited with helping rescue a 16-year-old girl who was abducted on her way to school, after he recognized silent signs of distress and intervened, authorities said.

The incident unfolded Monday morning, April 13, in Hamtramck, according to Police Chief Hussein Farhat. Officers responded quickly to reports of a possible kidnapping and located the suspect within minutes. The teenager was recovered safely.

“This appears to be an isolated incident, and there’s not believed to be continued threats to the community,” Farhat said during a press briefing.

Investigators say the suspect transported the victim to a Sunoco gas station in nearby Detroit roughly 30 minutes after the alleged abduction. It was there that clerk Abdulrahman Abohatem noticed something was wrong.

According to local reports, when the suspect instructed the girl to pay for cigarettes, she silently mouthed the word “help.” Abohatem immediately acted—leaving his protected area, confronting the suspect, and forcing him out of the store before guiding the girl to safety.

“I stop and go, there’s something wrong,” Abohatem later told local media, describing the moment he realized the teen was in danger.

Police arrived as Abohatem was removing the suspect and took him into custody. A weapon was also recovered at the scene.

Authorities later identified the suspect as Donald J. Fields, 48, of Detroit. He has been charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct, kidnapping, firearm possession, and felonious assault. He is currently being held without bond in Wayne County Jail.

Officials say community members also played a role in the rapid response. Students who witnessed the initial abduction reportedly tracked developments via phones and alerted others, aiding police efforts.

The victim, a student at Frontier International Academy, has since been reunited with her family and is recovering at home.

In a statement, the school confirmed the student’s safety and praised law enforcement’s swift action. City leaders also commended Abohatem’s response.

“I feel good when you save somebody. Sixteen years old—she is a child,” Abohatem said.

Officials continue to investigate the case, but emphasize that the quick-thinking actions of both the clerk and the community were critical in preventing further harm.
