California Gov. Gavin Newsom made a surprise appearance at the wedding of The Ultimatum: Queer Love stars Haley Drexler and Pilar Dizon.
The couple, who tied the knot at San Francisco City Hall on Thursday, Oct. 23, were taking photos with their photographer when they spotted Newsom, 58, exiting the building, according to ABC7.
“I turned around and saw him and just started freaking out,” Dizon recalled. “I was like, ‘No way, we’re walking in while he’s walking out.’”
After shouting “Daddy Newsom,” the governor joined them for a quick chat and congratulatory photo. “The epitome of serendipity,” Dizon said, adding that she thanked him for his ongoing support of the LGBTQ community.
Newsom has long been an advocate for same-sex marriage. Drexler referenced his early efforts in 2004, when as mayor of San Francisco, he directed the city to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples despite a federal ban, even officiating several ceremonies himself.
“He has a demonstrated history of protecting us,” Drexler said. “To see him in that specific moment was just so special — something we’ll never forget.”
Dizon agreed, saying, “The queer Ultimatum girls meeting Governor Newsom on their wedding day is the most San Francisco thing I’ve ever seen. It was just so sweet — so San Francisco and queer-coded.”
The two first met as students at UC Davis in June 2012. Thirteen years later, they appeared on season 2 of The Ultimatum: Queer Love, a Netflix series that follows women and non-binary couples navigating marriage ultimatums, trial relationships, and emotional crossroads.
Drexler joined the show hoping to test her decade-long relationship with Dizon. During the season, Dizon grappled with her decision not only about Drexler but also about potential trial partners Bridget Matloff and Kyle Neal.
Dizon shared on the show that her family “openly disapproves of her queer identity and relationship,” while Drexler expressed her desire to deepen their commitment, saying, “We have always been firmly planted next to one another, and I want an even deeper commitment.”

By the season finale, it was Dizon who proposed. The couple announced their engagement after the July episode aired — and now, their spontaneous City Hall encounter with the governor made their love story even more unforgettable.
