With just hours remaining in 2025, Donald Trump took aim at George Clooney, mocking the actor’s newly reported French citizenship in a late-night social media post. The remarks appeared to be a response to a recent interview in which Clooney described the former president as “a big goofball” before he entered politics.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump criticized Clooney and his wife, Amal Clooney, over their political views and France’s handling of immigration, while also revisiting Clooney’s role in Democratic fundraising during the last election cycle. Trump claimed the actor received more attention for his political commentary than for his film career and closed the post with his familiar campaign slogan.

Reports from The New York Times and other outlets indicated that France recently granted citizenship to the Clooneys and their children. Clooney, who was born in Kentucky, also retains U.S. citizenship.

Clooney responded with a brief statement addressing Trump’s remarks. “I totally agree with the current president,” he said. “We have to make America great again. We’ll start in November.”

In a separate interview with Variety, Clooney reflected on his past relationship with Trump before Trump entered elective politics. He said the two were once friendly, recalling casual encounters at restaurants and clubs, and described Trump at the time as unserious. “He’s a big goofball,” Clooney said, adding that Trump’s demeanor later changed.

Clooney also criticized recent decisions by major television networks to settle lawsuits brought by Trump, arguing that pushing back would have had broader implications for the media and the country. He further took aim at Bari Weiss, founder of The Free Press, after she was appointed to oversee CBS News under Paramount CEO David Ellison, noting that Weiss had invited him to visit the newsroom following her appointment.
