A Yorkie-poo was rescued on Christmas morning after apparently being abandoned inside a taped cardboard box.

Kelly McFarland, a Schenectady, N.Y., resident, was walking her dog along a bike trail near Schenectady County Community College when she spotted a small black female dog shivering in the cold beside a cardboard box. Rescuers believe the dog had been trapped inside before managing to break out.

“It had multiple wounds that were oozing,” McFarland told CBS 6 News, saying she’d never seen a dog so thin or in such poor condition. “It didn’t have much fur left.”

McFarland said the pup had sores across her skin, yet still sought affection right away. She contacted animal control and brought the dog into her car to warm up.

“The first thing it did was crawl into my lap and give me kisses,” she said. “This is a dog that probably never knew love, and the first thing it wanted was love.”

Veterinarians later told the outlet they believe the Yorkie-poo may have spent most of her life confined to a cage.

“I would love the person who did this to come forward and take ownership of this situation,” McFarland added.

When police arrived, the dog was rushed to an emergency veterinarian and is now stable, according to CBS 6 News. Rottie Empire Rescue has also stepped in to support her recovery and help find her a permanent home.

“Truly, I’m just so glad that people are taking care of this dog,” McFarland said.

Videos shared by the outlet show the dog’s condition improving since the rescue. While she still faces a long recovery, she’s now receiving consistent care and attention in her temporary home.

“We are proud to be able to be a part of her recovery,” the rescue wrote on Facebook. “She is in really bad shape medically, please keep her in your prayers.”
