“GOP Majority Hanging by a Thread”: Bernie Sanders Ally Analilia Mejia Sweeps NJ Special Election, Shrinking Republican Lead to Just Three Seats

Democrat Analilia Mejia secured victory in New Jersey’s special congressional election, further tightening the Republican Party’s fragile grip on the U.S. House of Representatives.

Decision Desk HQ projects Mejia defeated Republican challenger Joe Hathaway to claim the safely Democratic district. Mejia will serve the remainder of former Representative Mikie Sherrill’s term following Sherrill’s election as governor of New Jersey last November.

This outcome actively alters the calculus of a deeply divided Congress. The chamber’s partisan breakdown now stands at 217 Republicans to 214 Democrats, with one independent aligning with the GOP. Recent abrupt resignations by Representatives Tony Gonzales (R) and Eric Swalwell (D) over sexual misconduct allegations have already exacerbated the chamber’s instability.

A former union organizer and national political director for Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential bid, Mejia injects a staunchly progressive voice into the Democratic caucus. She campaigned aggressively on a working-class affordability platform, securing high-profile endorsements from progressive leaders including Sanders, Senator Elizabeth Warren, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Mejia’s core policy proposals include expanding child care funding, increasing taxes on top earners, raising the minimum wage, and abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). She intentionally distanced herself from establishment politics, campaigning to upend the standard “any old blue” model.

During an April debate, Mejia directly blamed conservative economic policies for rising consumer burdens. “People are drowning in credit card debt,” she stated, citing skyrocketing healthcare and energy costs.

The race grew fiercely contentious in its final weeks. Hathaway labeled Mejia a “radical socialist” out of step with the electorate. He also sharply criticized her vocal condemnation of Israel’s military actions in Gaza, which she characterized as a genocide.

Despite the attacks, Mejia dominated the financial race. She entered the election’s closing days holding nearly double Hathaway’s cash reserves. Her general election victory follows a narrow win in a crowded February primary, where she edged out former Representative Tom Malinowski.

The political battle in the district remains ongoing. Both Mejia and Hathaway will return to the ballot in June to compete in their respective party primaries for the upcoming full two-year term.
