A grandmother tragically lost her life in a car crash while heading home from a visit with her newborn grandson, her family says.
The fatal collision occurred around 4:15 p.m. on Friday, July 25, at the intersection of Fulton Industrial Boulevard and Robinson Drive, according to police reports cited by FOX affiliate WAGA-TV and NBC affiliate WXIA-TV.
Two individuals died at the scene, the South Fulton Police Department confirmed in a statement.
One of the victims has been identified by family members as 76-year-old Nancy Lee Veasy, ABC affiliate WSB-TV reported.
Nancy’s daughter, Ameera Joe, told the station that her mother had just visited her 1-month-old grandson and was on her way home when the crash occurred.
“She never put the baby down. The whole time,” said Nancy’s son, Japhet.
“She just loved holding babies — anyone’s baby,” added Cloys Veasy, Nancy’s husband of over 50 years.
Nancy had been driving along Fulton Industrial Boulevard when the incident occurred, according to WSB-TV.
A witness told the station that a truck was being driven erratically, eventually veering into the median and crossing into oncoming traffic, where it collided with two vehicles — including Nancy’s.
Japhet, who had been driving behind his mother at the time, said he rushed to her vehicle after the crash and discovered she had not survived.
“That’s all I can picture now,” he said. “I can still see her in the car.”
Authorities were seen handcuffing the truck driver involved in the crash. However, police say no charges have been filed at this time, pending further evidence. The investigation remains ongoing.
A funeral service for Nancy is scheduled to take place on August 11 at North Point Community Church in Alpharetta.
