Grandma Sparks Heated Debate When She Declares Parents Can Vacation Without Their Married Kids’ Spouses

A grandmother on TikTok, known as @grandmacampplanner, has stirred up a lively online argument after explaining why she thinks it can be perfectly fine for parents to take a family trip without their married children’s spouses.

In a video that quickly went viral, she said her point wasn’t about excluding anyone or creating conflict. Instead, she described a simple desire to spend time with “the ones you raised” — her own children — without the added dynamics that come with a larger group.

She told viewers that a vacation without sons- or daughters-in-law doesn’t mean the in-laws aren’t loved, welcome, or considered family. Sometimes, she said, parents just want a little space to reconnect with their kids one-on-one, and that relationship deserves its own moments.

The creator also noted that skipping a big, all-inclusive trip can actually make things easier for everyone. Travel can be expensive and stressful, she argued, and some in-laws might even prefer having the choice not to participate. In her view, occasional smaller trips with only parents and their children could be “the one thing that keeps the peace.”

Not everyone agreed. Many commenters insisted that once a child marries, their spouse should automatically be part of any “family vacation.” Some said the “original crew” changes after marriage, and that leaving spouses out feels hurtful, no matter the intention.

In a follow-up video, the grandmother said critics were misunderstanding her message. She emphasized that this isn’t about rejecting sons- or daughters-in-law. She said many parents deeply love their children’s partners, but still miss the closeness they once had with their kids before marriage.

Wanting a short trip or weekend alone with a son or daughter, she explained, isn’t about pushing anyone away — it’s more like a mix of love and grief as family roles evolve. She added that this feeling can be even stronger for single parents who spent years as a tight two-person unit with their child. Letting go, she said, can hit differently when you raised them alone.

Even with the backlash, she held firm: her view comes from affection, not exclusion. She said she values in-laws even more because they now love her children in ways parents no longer can. As families grow, she added, love doesn’t disappear — it just changes shape.
