A 21-year-old Arlington man is behind bars after allegedly shooting his grandmother to death following a dispute over his allowance. Rontrell Jackson faces a murder charge in connection with the Friday, March 20, slaying of the 68-year-old victim.
The Arlington Police Department (APD) launched an investigation after receiving a call from a family member at approximately 4:40 p.m. According to official reports, the relative discovered the woman lying unresponsive on her apartment patio, partially concealed by a blanket.
First responders arrived shortly after the call, but the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. While her identity has not yet been formally released by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office, police confirmed she lived in the residence where the shooting occurred.
The investigation quickly focused on Jackson, the victim’s grandson. Detectives revealed that the two had been involved in a “heated argument” regarding the loss of Jackson’s allowance money.
During a custodial interview, police allege that Jackson admitted to:
- Shooting his grandmother inside the apartment earlier that morning.
- Moving her body to the outdoor patio.
- Attempting to hide the crime by covering her with a blanket.
Forensic investigators recovered a firearm from the apartment, which ballistics experts believe is the murder weapon.
Jackson was initially booked into the Arlington City Jail before being transferred to the Tarrant County Jail. He is currently held on a $750,000 bond.
The incident has left neighbors in the Arlington community shaken. Jerry and Keiarra Dennis, who lived near the victim, expressed their disbelief to local news outlets.
“For someone to have lost their life over an allowance, over a disagreement, that’s the part where it’s hard to process,” Keiarra Dennis told WFAA.
The Arlington Police Department has not released further details regarding the specific caliber of the weapon or any prior history of domestic calls to the residence.
