A Hawaii jury has delivered a guilty verdict against Gerhardt Konig, a prominent anesthesiologist, for the attempted manslaughter of his wife during a violent confrontation on a coastal cliffside in March 2025.

The conviction, handed down Wednesday, April 8, concludes a high-profile trial that pitted the physician’s claims of self-defense against the harrowing testimony of his wife and his own son.

Jurors found Konig guilty of attempted manslaughter predicated on extreme mental or emotional disturbance (EMED). This specific conviction carries a maximum statutory sentence of 20 years in prison.

The verdict follows a year-long investigation into the events that occurred on a steep Honolulu precipice, where prosecutors argued Konig systematically attempted to end the life of his wife, Arielle Konig.

Arielle Konig, a 37-year-old nuclear engineer, provided a chilling account of the assault during her March 24 testimony. She detailed a struggle in which her husband allegedly:

  • Attempted to drag her to the edge of a sheer cliff.
  • Tried to inject her with an unidentified chemical substance.
  • Struck her in the head repeatedly with a rock.

The attack only ceased when two nearby hikers heard Arielle’s screams and alerted emergency services, causing the defendant to flee the scene.

In a rare and damaging move, the defendant’s son, Emile Konig, testified against his father on March 31. Emile informed the court that his father called him immediately following the incident, admitting he had “tried to kill” Arielle but noted that she had ultimately “gotten away.” Throughout his testimony, Emile pointedly referred to his father only as “the defendant.”

Honolulu Prosecuting Attorney Steve Alm lauded the jury’s decision and the bravery of the witnesses who intervened.

“I want to thank the jurors, the survivor, the independent witnesses at the scene who helped her… it’s a good day for the good guys,” Alm stated, specifically citing the “determined and thorough” work of Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Joel Garner.

Gerhardt Konig remains in custody at the Oʻahu Community Correctional Center. He is currently awaiting a formal sentencing hearing, where he faces up to two decades of incarceration. Legal experts suggest the defense’s attempt to pivot to a “self-defense” narrative failed to gain traction in the face of forensic evidence and corroborated witness reports.
