A 24-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison Monday for the “brutal and random” murder of a woman he attacked immediately after flipping his car in a drug-fueled crash.
Chukwuemeka Michael Ahanonu will serve a minimum of 21 years and six months for the 2025 killing of Nila Patel, 56. The sentencing follows a March 23 conviction at Leicester Crown Court. Ahanonu previously pleaded guilty to charges of dangerous driving, possession of drugs with intent to supply, and assaulting an emergency worker.
The fatal encounter began in June 2024 when Ahanonu, driving under the influence of cannabis, lost control of his vehicle in Leicester. According to police reports, Ahanonu struck a curb in front of a bus stop before driving on the wrong side of the road and overturning the car.
As bystanders rushed to help him escape the wreckage, Ahanonu fled the scene on foot. He encountered Patel a short distance away as she walked home from a nearby bus stop.
Investigators confirmed the two were complete strangers. Without provocation, Ahanonu launched a sustained assault, with witnesses reporting that he punched, kicked, and stamped on the victim. Patel suffered a fractured skull and a catastrophic brain injury; she died in a local hospital two days later.
During the investigation, Leicestershire Police recovered “dealer bags” of cannabis from Ahanonu’s vehicle. Surveillance footage and interrogation recordings released by authorities show a defendant who claimed to have no memory of the violence.
In the footage, Ahanonu is seen laughing briefly before telling detectives, “If I don’t laugh, I cry, I’m in so much pain right now.” Upon being shown video evidence of the fatal assault, Ahanonu appeared to weep, repeatedly stating, “I don’t remember killing her. I need to see it.”
Detective Inspector Emma Matts characterized the incident as one of the most “horrific and violent” random attacks in recent memory.
“This was a stranger attack on a kind, gentle, and loving woman who was simply making her way home,” Matts said in a statement. Patel’s family, who attended the proceedings, remembered her as a “beautiful, vibrant soul.”
The life sentence concludes a case that has shocked the local community, highlighting the devastating consequences of drug-impaired driving and unprovoked street violence.
