Heroic Off-Duty Firefighter and Wife Rescue 2 People from Burning Car After New Year’s Day Crash

An off-duty firefighter and his wife helped rescue two people from a burning vehicle in North Carolina during the early morning hours of New Year’s Day.

The crash happened around midnight on Thursday, Jan. 1, at the intersection of Hilmongrove Road and Cameronhill Road, according to a news release from the Crains Creek Fire Department.

When fire crews arrived, they found a car that had struck a tree along the roadside and was fully engulfed in flames. Two people were discovered outside the vehicle, lying on the ground.

An investigation later revealed that off-duty firefighter Dylan Turney and his wife, Kiersten Turney, had pulled the occupants from the car as the fire broke out and ensured they were safely away from the burning vehicle.

Turney is a full-time firefighter with Spout Springs Emergency Services and also volunteers with the Crains Creek Fire Department. Officials said he lives near the crash site and responded after hearing the impact while at home.

“Great job Dylan!!!” Spout Springs Emergency Services wrote in a Facebook post following the rescue.

The two individuals rescued from the burning car were transported by ambulance to a trauma center, according to the fire department. Their identities and medical conditions have not been released.

Firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined.

The incident marked the fire department’s first call of the year, the news release noted. The Crains Creek Fire Department and Spout Springs Emergency Services did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
