WASHINGTON, D.C. — A House committee voted Monday to rename part of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in honor of former First Lady Melania Trump, a move praised by Republicans but criticized by Democrats as politically motivated and lacking proper oversight.

The GOP-led House Appropriations Committee approved the name change by a 33-25 vote as part of a broader spending package. If enacted into law, the opera house at the Kennedy Center would be officially renamed the “First Lady Melania Trump Opera House.”

Rep. Mike Simpson (R-Idaho), who led the effort, called the designation “an excellent way to recognize her support and commitment to promoting the arts.”

But Democrats pushed back, arguing the renaming is a partisan gesture that expands Donald Trump’s control over a key national cultural institution. Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) accused Republicans of slipping the provision into a massive spending bill with little debate.

“They’ve inserted something that’s clearly divisive — renaming part of a revered public arts center after a member of the Trump family,” Pingree said. “It gives the former president even more influence over the Kennedy Center, with very little congressional oversight.”

The proposal comes as Republicans, who currently control both chambers of Congress, continue to support Trump’s ongoing influence in Washington. Trump himself previously fired most of the Kennedy Center board upon taking office and installed himself as chairman. He’s also voiced cultural critiques, including denouncing drag shows and mocking the popular musical Hamilton.

“We’ll make it great again,” Trump said during a tour of the venue in March. “It has tremendous potential, but I’ve been very disappointed when I look around.”

If the legislation passes the full House and Senate, the renaming would join a broader Trump-era overhaul of the Kennedy Center. Lawmakers have already allocated $256.7 million for upgrades through 2029 — six times more than usual, according to Pingree. The latest bill includes $37.2 million in new annual funding for the fiscal year starting October 1.

Melania Trump has long drawn media attention for her modern, often private approach to the first lady role. Since leaving the White House, she has remained largely out of the spotlight but continues to be celebrated by Trump allies.

Critics say the proposal to rename the opera house is less about honoring her contributions and more about cementing the Trump family legacy at a historic venue long associated with President John F. Kennedy’s cultural vision.

The bill now heads to the full House for debate. The Senate would also need to approve the measure for the name change to take effect.
