Authorities in Nevada say human remains found near the Carson River may belong to a kayaker who vanished in 2023.
On Friday, Dec. 5, members of the Carson City Sheriff’s Office discovered the remains near Trainwreck Rapids in Brunswick Canyon, according to local outlets including News4 and the Reno Gazette Journal.
The area was secured overnight, and detectives returned the following day with Carson City Search and Rescue to recover the remains, along with clothing and other personal items, per reports from Kolo, News4 and the Reno Gazette Journal.
Investigators believe the remains may be those of kayaker Robert Lawson White, who disappeared in June 2023.
White, 52, went missing the same day as another kayaker, James Martin, 59, after the pair set out on the Carson River near Brunswick Canyon, Kolo previously reported. The men were expected to return from their outing that same day.
Martin’s body was recovered in July 2023, after multiple witnesses reported seeing a body in the river. Authorities later located his remains approximately 1.7 miles east of the Brunswick Canyon Bridge.
At the time, Martin was described as 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing about 200 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. White was described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing around 220 pounds, with blond hair and green eyes.
Officials say White’s next of kin have been notified about the discovery of the remains. Formal, scientific identification will be carried out at the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office.
