“I Oughta Nationalize the Voting”: Trump Prepares ‘National Emergency’ Order to Seize Control of 2026 Elections

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump is reportedly considering a sweeping executive order to declare a national emergency over federal elections, a move that would bypass Congress to mandate voter ID and ban mail-in ballots ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

The proposal, first detailed by The Washington Post, involves a 17-page draft executive order currently circulating among White House officials and MAGA activists. The document alleges foreign interference—specifically citing China—as the legal justification for the President to invoke extraordinary commander-in-chief powers to seize control of voting procedures traditionally managed by the states.

A Bid for Federal Control

The draft order represents the most aggressive move yet in the President’s long-standing campaign to “nationalize” the voting process. Speaking recently with conservative commentator Dan Bongino, Trump signaled his intent to take direct action in key jurisdictions.

“The Republicans should say, ‘We want to take over, we should take over the voting in at least 15 places,'” Trump stated, adding that the GOP “oughta nationalize the voting.”

The proposed executive order aims to:

Mandate Universal Voter ID: Requiring specific identification at all polling stations nationwide.

Ban Mail-in Ballots: Ending the practice of no-excuse mail-in voting for federal contests.

Phase Out Voting Machines: Transitioning away from electronic systems that activists claim are vulnerable to foreign hacking.

Activists supporting the measure argue that if foreign intrusion into election infrastructure is “provable,” the President has the authority to act under national security protocols.

“We have a situation where the president is aware that there are foreign interests that are interfering in our election processes,” said Peter Ticktin, a prominent activist involved in the draft’s circulation. “The president has to be able to deal with it.”

However, legal experts and election officials have noted that these claims of widespread foreign manipulation in previous cycles have been repeatedly debunked by the Department of Justice and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).

Political Fallout and Midterm Strategy

The President has framed the issue as a matter of survival for the Republican party, using his Truth Social platform to blast Democratic leaders. In a February 13 post, Trump claimed that 85% of Democratic voters actually support voter ID, despite opposition from congressional leadership.

“If we can’t get it through Congress, there are legal reasons why this SCAM is not permitted,” Trump wrote. “I will be presenting them shortly, in the form of an Executive Order.”

The timing of this potential declaration coincides with a period of heightened military tension, following the President’s recent announcement of “major combat operations” in Iran. Critics argue that declaring a domestic national emergency alongside a foreign conflict could represent an unprecedented expansion of executive authority.

Constitutional Challenges Loom

Constitutional scholars warn that such an order would face immediate and rigorous challenges in federal court. The U.S. Constitution (Article I, Section 4) grants state legislatures the primary authority to regulate the “Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections.”

Any attempt to override state laws via executive fiat would likely trigger a landmark showdown at the Supreme Court, testing the limits of presidential power in the modern era.

What’s Next: White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has yet to confirm a specific date for the signing of the order. Meanwhile, voting rights advocacy groups are reportedly preparing “day-of” litigation to freeze the implementation of any emergency voting mandates.
