“I Think He’s Wrong on That. Totally Wrong”: Trump Publicly Rebukes Energy Secretary Over $3 Gas Warnings as National Average Hits $4.04

President Donald Trump publicly rebuked Energy Secretary Chris Wright on Monday, dismissing departmental warnings that gasoline prices will remain above $3 per gallon until 2027. The internal friction emerges as the administration struggles to manage the economic fallout of a widening war with Iran.

“I think he’s wrong on that. Totally wrong,” Trump told reporters on April 20. His comments followed a Sunday interview where Wright admitted uncertainty regarding a price decline, citing the ongoing volatility in global energy markets.

Market Volatility and the Blockade

The national average for a gallon of gas reached $4.04 on Monday, according to AAA data—a sharp increase from $3.15 just one year ago. Market analysts attribute the surge to the conflict launched by U.S. and Israeli forces on February 28.

The war has effectively choked global oil transit. Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz was met last week by a total U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports. On Truth Social, Trump defended the strategy, stating the blockade is “absolutely destroying Iran” and will remain in place until a “DEAL” is reached.

Diplomatic Stakes in Pakistan

The administration’s hopes for de-escalation now rest on Vice President JD Vance, who arrives in Pakistan on Tuesday to lead a second round of negotiations. Previous talks earlier this month failed to yield a ceasefire or reopen vital shipping lanes.

Trump continues to frame the conflict as a necessary correction of past “cowardly leadership,” promising that a finalized deal will guarantee “Peace, Security, and Safety” for the West and Israel.

Rising Political and Human Costs

Despite the President’s optimism, domestic approval is cratering. Recent polling highlights a growing disconnect between the White House and the electorate:

  • Blame: 65% of voters blame Trump for the gas price surge (Quinnipiac).
  • War Approval: Only 36% of Americans approve of the administration’s management of the Iran conflict.
  • Cost of Living: Two-thirds of families report gas prices as a “serious” problem (NBC News).

Congressional critics have seized on the discord. Sen. Andy Kim (D-N.J.) labeled the current economic climate a “Trump war tax,” arguing the administration lacks a coherent plan to stabilize the pump.

The human toll of the conflict also continues to mount. Iranian officials reported 3,375 deaths as of Monday, while the Lebanese health ministry confirmed nearly 2,300 fatalities following the Israeli invasion of Lebanon.

As the blockade tightens and the diplomatic mission in Pakistan begins, the administration remains split on whether the American consumer will see relief this year or the next.
