Luigi Mangione’s Friday, Dec. 5, evidence suppression hearing was postponed after he fell ill, Judge Gregory Carro announced from the bench on Friday morning.
Mangione, 27, is accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson last December. He is in court this week as his legal team seeks to block key pieces of evidence from being used in his state case, where he is charged with second-degree murder.
He was expected to return to Manhattan Supreme Court on Friday for the fourth day of hearings. Instead, at around 9:45 a.m., Judge Carro informed the courtroom that Mangione was “ill” and would not be appearing.
Mangione’s attorney, Marc Agnifilo, declined to comment when asked about his client’s condition.
The proceedings are scheduled to resume on the morning of Monday, Dec. 8.
Over three days of testimony, seven witnesses have taken the stand. The court has heard from prison guards who say they had extensive conversations with Mangione while he was held in solitary confinement in Pennsylvania.
Police officers who arrested him at a McDonald’s — where he was eating a Steak, Egg & Cheese McMuffin — have also testified. The 911 call from the restaurant, along with police body-camera footage from the arrest and subsequent interrogation, has been played in open court.
Mangione has watched the recordings quietly, showing little visible reaction as he confers with his attorneys, takes notes, and occasionally turns toward supporters seated in the gallery.
He has pleaded not guilty to the murder charges both in state court, which is the focus of this week’s hearings, and in federal court, where he could face the death penalty if convicted.
