A parenting influencer and pediatric nurse practitioner is speaking out after her 23-month-old son was seriously injured in a driveway accident she describes as a “true nightmare for parents.”
Kelly Hopton-Jones, who runs the blog Hillside Farmhouse, said her son Henry is recovering in the hospital after she accidentally ran him over while pulling out of her driveway on April 15. The incident occurred as she was leaving with her 3-year-old daughter, Lily, for a dance performance.
“Today has been the worst day of our lives,” Hopton-Jones wrote in an Instagram post, underscoring how quickly routine moments can turn into emergencies.
According to her account, Henry had wandered behind the vehicle unnoticed. Neighbors immediately intervened, taking care of Lily while the parents rushed their son to the emergency room.
Doctors later confirmed that while Henry suffered pelvic fractures and abrasions, he avoided more severe trauma. “He is hurt, but this is something he can recover from,” Hopton-Jones recalled a physician telling her, calling the outcome “a true miracle.”
The influencer emphasized that there were no major internal injuries or head trauma—factors that often determine long-term outcomes in similar incidents involving young children.
Despite the relatively positive prognosis, Hopton-Jones described the emotional toll as profound. “We are in shock. We are so sad,” she wrote, adding that she and her husband, Brian, have been grappling with overwhelming “what if” scenarios.
In her message, she also reflected on self-blame and the broader reality of parenting risks. “Accidents happen, and the only mistakes are the ones we don’t learn from,” she noted, urging compassion toward oneself in moments of crisis.
Driveway accidents involving young children, sometimes referred to as “backover incidents,” remain a persistent safety concern globally. Experts often recommend measures such as rearview cameras, walking around the vehicle before moving it, and ensuring children are accounted for at all times.
Hopton-Jones said she now considers her family “on the lucky side” of what could have been a far worse outcome. Sharing a photo of her son in recovery, she added, “We are holding him a little tighter tonight.”
Henry is expected to recover over time as his injuries heal.
