An Iowa bride made sure her terminally ill mother was there to witness her wedding day.

Stephanie Couser told KCCI-TV that she and her then-fiancé, Tim, originally planned to marry on Sept. 20, 2025. But they decided to move the date up after her mother, Marlys Carson, suddenly took a turn for the worse.

Doctors at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa, warned the family that Marlys’ condition was not improving. Her body was not responding to treatment for stage 4 lung cancer and pneumonia.

“[The doctor] came in early for his rounds and [we had] tough conversations about where we’re at,” Stephanie recalled to KCCI-TV. She added that the diagnosis had been especially shocking because her mother had never smoked.

After that conversation, Stephanie knew she didn’t want to wait. She called Tim and asked a simple question: “Do you want to get married today?”

With her fiancé on board, hospital staff quickly stepped in to help make it happen. The team arranged a wedding on short notice in the hospital chapel, including securing a cake from a local bakery and finding a photographer — who turned out to be a nurse from the labor and delivery unit.

Stephanie said her best friend, who was eight months pregnant at the time, handled one of the most important tasks: getting the wedding rings. She told KCCI-TV the rings came from Walmart.

“Can you imagine that? An eight-month pregnant woman at the Walmart ring counter?” Stephanie said with a laugh.

Meanwhile, nurses transformed Marlys’ intensive care unit (ICU) room into a makeshift bridal suite, creating a space where mother and daughter could share quiet, meaningful moments.

“They made the room feel like it was not a hospital room, and it was just my mom and I,” Stephanie told KCCI-TV. “I got to help do her makeup and hair, her spraying me with perfume, and then helping me get into my dress.”

Stephanie and Tim exchanged vows in the hospital chapel with about a dozen guests. Marlys sat in the front row, present for every moment.

Stephanie later expressed deep gratitude to the nurses and hospital staff for helping create one more cherished memory with her mother. “To go above and beyond is something I can never say thank you enough for,” she said.

Marlys died four days after the wedding. Eight weeks later, the couple held a larger ceremony, where her memory was honored.

“I know Marlys is watching over us today,” the pastor who married the couple said at the ceremony, according to KCCI-TV.

Stephanie shared that she felt her mother with her that day as well, telling the outlet, “I absolutely felt her presence with me and she gave me the strength to walk down the aisle and be here along with Tim.”
