Chelsea Clinton navigated a late-race fall to complete her first Boston Marathon on Monday, crossing the Boylston Street finish line in 3:40:52.

Former President Bill Clinton, 79, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, 78, met their daughter at the finish. The former president personally presented the 46-year-old with her finisher’s medal.

The achievement came despite a physical setback in the final stages of the 26.2-mile course. Clinton sustained a bloody hand after falling at mile 23, an incident she described as “brutal” in post-race footage captured by WCVB NewsCenter 5.

Clinton, who serves as vice chair of the Clinton Foundation, reportedly registered for the race under a pseudonym. This move aligns with her long-standing advocacy for the privacy of “first children.”

In March 2024, Clinton publicly defended Barron Trump’s right to a private life upon his 18th birthday, arguing that the media should leave private citizens alone regardless of their parents’ political status. While Clinton has moved into the “public domain” as an adult, her use of an alias during the marathon underscores a continued effort to separate personal milestones from public spectacle.

Monday’s performance marks a significant personal best for Clinton. Her 3:40:52 finish significantly improved upon her 2021 New York City Marathon time of 3:59:09. During that race, she competed just six weeks after a treadmill accident had threatened her participation.

The 2021 race was also a milestone for the family, as it marked one of Bill Clinton’s first major public appearances following his hospitalization for a urological infection.

The 130th running of the marathon featured a diverse field of notable figures. Clinton shared the course with:

  • Kristine Lilly: U.S. soccer legend.
  • Suni Williams: NASA astronaut.
  • Bryan Arenales: Television personality.

Following the race, Clinton was seen celebrating with 2014 Boston Marathon champion Meb Keflezighi. She was also supported by her husband, Marc Mezvinsky, and their three children: Charlotte, Aidan, and Jasper.

Clinton’s finish adds her name to the historical roster of the world’s oldest annual marathon, maintaining her family’s visibility in major American cultural events even as they transition into elder statesmanship.
